In the February issue of Učitelské noviny, an in depth article was published on outdoor pedagogy and an innovative course at the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia. The course focuses on outdoor learning in kindergartens. Its introduction is the result of the faculty’s long term strategy and support from the Karel Komárek Family Foundation, which systematically contributes to the development of early childhood education in natural outdoor settings.

The article introduced the new course, Outdoor Learning in Kindergarten Settings, developed by Marie Najmonová, Head of the Department of Primary and Pre Primary Education. The course prepares future teachers to make full didactic use of outdoor spaces, and it is designed as a first step toward a broader transformation of teacher training. At the same time, the faculty is working on the reaccreditation of its study programmes, with the long term aim of introducing outdoor pedagogy as a standard part of education in Czech kindergartens.

The new course was created thanks to a grant from the Karel Komárek Family Foundation, and our long term commitment to guiding students towards outdoor learning. We wanted our graduates to be able to fully draw on the educational potential of outdoor spaces for teaching, and not use them only for rest or walks.
