The subject of the competition is an architectural and artistic proposal for the redesign of the public space at the corner of Žižkova and Osvobození streets, which forms the natural main entrance to Jiráskovy Sady. The competition follows the removal of the monument Honour and Glory to the Soviet Army, which had stood at this site since 1975 and was removed from the park in June of this year.
“We are looking for a dignified and contemporary solution. The specific form of the proposal is neither thematically nor formally prescribed. It may take the form of an artwork, a small architectural structure, or a landscape intervention. The jury will assess the quality and comprehensiveness of the proposal and its ability to respond to the character of the site,” said Litoměřice Deputy Mayor Jiří Adámek.
The intention to launch the competition was approved by the City Assembly in June of this year, directly in connection with the decision to remove the soldier statue from Jiráskovy Sady. This step responded to a long‑standing public debate on the form of public space and on how historical events should be commemorated.
“The aim is not to replace one symbol with another, but to create a high‑quality public space with new cultural value that reflects the contemporary perception of the city and the park,” Deputy Mayor Jiří Adámek added. He also noted that the expert jury selecting the winning proposal will include a representative of the Karel Komárek Family Foundation, which has been involved in the overall revitalisation of Jiráskovy Sady since 2010.
„It is very important to our foundation that the final solution is in line with the original brief of the architectural competition and with the overall concept of the transformation of Jiráskovy Sady. We are aware that residents continue to pay close attention to the appearance of this space. The site where the monument stood represents the main entrance to the park from the city centre and therefore deserves special consideration. The resulting solution should therefore be as sensitive as possible.“
The expert part of the jury, assembled with an emphasis on interdisciplinary representation, also includes visual artist Richard Loskot, landscape architect Marie Gelová, and architect and editor‑in‑chief of the architectural magazine ERA21, Filip Landa.
The estimated investment costs are set at CZK 2 million excluding VAT. This amount covers project documentation, implementation of the work or interventions themselves, possible technological elements, urban furniture, and landscape adjustments within the area concerned. Emphasis will also be placed on the financial feasibility of the proposals, their sustainability, and their durability in the public space.
The competition is announced as open, and the proposals will be assessed anonymously by the jury, in accordance with applicable legislation and the competition rules of the Czech Chamber of Architects. The deadline for submitting competition proposals is 18 March 2026 at 12 noon. The jury evaluation meeting is planned for the end of March, and the competition results are expected to be announced in April 2026.
