Five years ago, the City of Hodonín could hardly have imagined that its approach to public space after the tornado could become a model example for other cities in the Czech Republic. Thanks to cooperation with the Karel Komárek Family Foundation, Hodonín expanded its original 2021 plan, which included 12 projects, to twice that number in the years that followed. The city has therefore worked, or is working, on 24 projects with a total value of around 32.5 million EUR.
„Over the past five years, Bažantnice has quite literally changed before our eyes. Park U Červených domků, as well as other projects such as the House of Nature with its garden, which we officially opened two years ago, are the result of cooperation between the city, architects, and local people. The Karel Komárek Family Foundation played an important role and helped us change the way we think about public space.“
The scale of the transformation of Hodonín’s public space after the disaster is unmatched in the Czech Republic, as shown by further figures. Around 2,500 people became involved, along with 45 partner organisations and professionals from 12 architecture and landscape studios. In addition to the city, a further 25 co investors contributed to the financing.
„The way Hodonín’s public space has been restored is entirely unique and perfectly aligns with our thinking and the way we work as a foundation. From the very beginning, the new buildings and parks have been driven by an effort to view the disaster and its destructive consequences as an opportunity to deliver innovative projects in Hodonín with a positive impact on the lives of people across the entire region. The city built on our approach and tackled the projects conceptually, with a long term vision and the determination to secure additional financial resources. That is why we were able to make the most of this opportunity.“
The Hodonín City Council awarded Karel Komárek honorary citizenship for his exceptional contribution to his hometown, long term support of public benefit projects, and significant assistance to the region after the devastating tornado in 2021.
What Does the New Park in Hodonín Offer
Park U Červených domků offers new opportunities for meeting, sport, movement, and rest. Thanks to cooperation between the city, the Foundation, architects, experts, and the local community, a modern place has been created that responds to people’s needs and naturally encourages them to spend more time outdoors.
The park’s central area and a circular trail for running, walking, or cycling and scooter riding offer new options for active leisure time. Visitors can also use a workout zone with a climbing wall and a run up track. With dozens of trees and extensive low greenery, the park forms a clear and safe place that connects important routes in Bažantnice.
A new way of thinking about public space is also reflected in how the park is set within the broader Bažantnice context. Individual sports areas are not enclosed by solid fences. For example, the grass football pitch with goals and the basketball practice area are accessible to everyone. The space also complements the House of Nature of the Hodonínská Dúbrava well.
The Entire Bažantnice Area Is Undergoing Renewal
Park U Červených domků is part of the overall restoration of Bažantnice and its surrounding area after the tornado. Related projects include the House of Nature of the Hodonínská Dúbrava National Nature Monument with its garden, completed in 2024, the Sportovní areál U Červených domků, the park in front of ZŠ U Červených domků, and the Bažantnice suburban forest park. The children’s mini town is closest to completion, with its opening expected in autumn this year.
