A Transformation Rooted in the Past
Střed Park underwent a major renovation that culminated in its opening on 1 May 2024. The final design emerged from a carefully prepared architectural competition, a reflection of the park’s rich past, and suggestions from the wider public. In other words, the transformation was guided by respect for the park’s history and the needs of local residents, with an emphasis on the utility of public space. The reconstruction cost approximately EUR 4.94 million.
“At the foundation, we see public space as a platform where the social life of a city naturally develops by building relationships within the local community. By dividing the space with new elements such as a stage, café, sports facilities, and a seniors’ outdoor gym, new meeting places have been created that also offer diverse opportunities for leisure,” said Luboš Veselý, KKFF Director, at the ceremonial opening.
History in a Contemporary Approach
The architects drew inspiration from the park’s original 1970s design by architect Václav Krejčí and landscape architect Otakar Kuča. The new solution thus sensitively built on the site’s history. A typical example is the popular water cascade. Although the area formed by concrete “pools” is more modest due to requirements for low‑impact operation, the original artwork has been preserved and water has returned to the cascades.
“Our design reflects the character of the surrounding mining landscape. We modelled the terrain using terraces that created active bands on which we placed the park’s features and sculptures,” said German landscape architect Till Rehwaldt.
“We used part of the removed water feature for the café’s bar counter and also relocated the popular sculpture Biologické těleso so that it stands out better in the park,” added architect Patrik Hoffman.
