From the perspective of modern architecture and the transformation of public spaces, it is also essential that the park’s restoration was carried out with great sensitivity to its original elements. The architects preserved valuable artworks, which were restored as part of the revitalisation, and maintained the existing mature greenery while adding new plantings.
The text highlights how the complete renewal of the park responded to the needs of local residents. Unlike the original concept, based on a single centre, the new design is built on decentralisation.
Thanks to this approach, play and sports features are evenly distributed throughout the area and linked by concrete terraces that also serve as seating areas or small cultural venues. The author of the article also praised the creation of a café with a viewing roof, which has become the new focal point of the park, offering a unique view of the restored water reservoir and cascade – a valuable historical elements preserved in a modern form.
“Of the three award‑winning competition designs, ours was exactly in between two extremes. The conservative design preserved the entire original water feature, while the radical one completely rewrote the park’s layout. We decided to keep only the most valuable part – the axis with the pool leading towards Hněvín – and replace the removed parts of the fountain with the café and stage,” adds architect Tomáš Černý of Rehwald Landscape Architect, the company that, together with Atelier Hoffman, collaborated on the renewal with KKFF.
New park increased people’s sense of safety
In the new park, safety was a priority from the outset. It has been strengthened by a camera system and continuous supervision by administrators. The park also manages rainwater efficiently, minimising the use of drinking water.
