We Stand with Ukraine. Four Years Since the Start of the War

Emergency AidNews

On the 4th anniversary of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Karel Komárek Family Foundation recalls that it has supported Ukraine since the first days of the Russian invasion. The first steps taken immediately after the conflict began were humanitarian and focused on people affected by the war. We then supported families with children who fled to the Czech Republic and helped with the integration of Ukrainian children in our country. We also initiated the Ark I and Ark III projects, which contribute to the protection of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

Help Four Years Ago

Right after the war broke out in February 2022, together with our partners we secured and delivered humanitarian aid to Ukraine in the form of equipment and basic necessities. Over time, the support moved from an immediate crisis response to longer term assistance. We focused on refugee families in the Czech Republic and helped provide them with safe accommodation. We also set up adaptation groups and co organized leisure time activities for children, helping them join education more easily.

The Ark Project

Our long term initiative to support Ukraine is the Ark project, which responds to Russia’s efforts to threaten the identity of the Ukrainian nation through attacks on its cultural heritage. Mobile units make it possible to professionally conserve, document, and digitize damaged collections and historical artefacts directly in the field.

Together with our partners, we built Ark I, focused on the conservation and rescue of written cultural heritage, and we are now working on Ark III, which expands the project to include digitization and 3D documentation of valuable exhibits. We see the preservation of cultural memory as an important prerequisite for the country’s future recovery.

Supporting Ukraine is part of a broader responsibility toward the society we want to live in. A responsibility that does not end with the first impulse of solidarity, but continues.

Four years after the start of Russia's full‑on invasion, it is more important than ever to be clear and unequivocal in our support for Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine is a sign of responsibility: upholding the values on which our society is based – respect for human life, freedom and the rule of law. Our commitment is not a short‑term gesture. It is an expression of our long‑term belief in the strength of Ukrainian society, its resilience, and its ability to get back on its feet. Because a free and secure Ukraine is the key to a secure Europe and a future in which truth, justice, and human dignity prevail.
