International Month of School Gardens

Environment

We encourage adults and children to spend more time outdoors. Outdoor activities help to calm the mind and improve focus. Whether it's a garden, courtyard, or park, both young and old return recharged with new energy. In today's fast paced world, the importance of taking a breath and slowing down is greater than ever.

We Want to Get Kids Outside

In 2023, we conducted the Czech Children Outdoors survey for the second time. What did we find? Both children and adults want to be outside in all weather! Despite this, children spend an average of only two hours outdoors on a regular weekday. Let’s change that together—let’s take kids outside more, maybe for the entire morning!

Our Activities Open the Path to Nature

In collaboration with Učíme se venku and kindergarten educators, we have developed many outdoor activities over the past few years. Last autumn we chose the best, most effective activities that encourage learning and fun through real‑world interactions and experience. A big thank you to everyone who helped us prepare them. And now—let’s get outside!

The garden is a classroom, too. And that’s true all year round!

The reason I joined with my class was the perfectly prepared materials, with clear task descriptions and well‑organized worksheets. It made it easy for me to prepare everything I needed for the activities and immediately dive into outdoor exploration with the children.

In our class, we have children with physical disabilities, children with ADHD, and non‑native speakers. Outdoor activities erased these differences. The children collaborated well, helped each other, and were more attentive and considerate. There was no need to deal with disciplinary issues or quarrels.

The outdoor activities as part of International Month of School Gardens confirmed to me that we can explore the garden and play in it with the children from morning till evening.

It probably wouldn’t have occurred to us to move everyday school activities outside. And yet, it was so easy to implement.
