How to design cities that are good for children? This was the question addressed at the Start with Children 2025 Summit in Bratislava in May. KKFF not only actively participated in the event, but also supported it. The two‑day programme offered inspiring lectures, discussions and opportunities to network with experts from all over the world.

The second edition of the Start with Children Summit took place on 14‑15 May 2025 in the iconic Old Market Hall and in the historic centre of Bratislava. The Karel Komárek Family Foundation was there ‑ together with colleagues from Hodonín, we spent two days discussing, lecturing and exchanging experiences with experts from the fields of urban planning, architecture, education and community development.

The programme raised a number of topical issues: better housing for families, support for carers, the involvement of children and young people in urban planning, risky play and the impact of technology on early child development.

Among the speakers, we were impressed by Tim Gill, who highlighted the importance of outdoor play, mobility and managed risk for healthy childhoods, and Dinah Bornat, who showed how good housing design can contribute to a sense of safety and belonging for children and families. Carlos Moreno introduced the concept of the 15‑minute city as a path to a more sustainable and accessible urban life, based on real human needs.

The summit was a valuable opportunity for learning, networking and reflection. We took away many ideas, inspiration and motivation to continue our efforts to create spaces where every generation can thrive.
